THE SKALATONES RELEASE NEW SINGLE!

This new stomping record is called "Y2K Anniversary Single" to celebrate The Skalatones 5th year as a band. The record is released by AMTY Records & Step Aside Records on 7" vinyl only.

The first track is a typical uptempo, bubbling skala-track called "Y2SKA". The second is a cover of the Bob Marley classic "Rude Boy Ska", a more traditional ska-tune with a twist... The B-side of this longplay single is an interview when the band made a visit to Jamaica, after finishing the recording of the "Tune In..." album. It's an edit from a live radio-take from "West 104".

The record will only be released on vinyl, and the first 500 copies are a limited edition on white vinyl.
(Order no: STEP 003)

SPECIALS BACK AGAIN!

After countless rumours addressing the demise of the (reformed) Specials, now here's something for you all - The Specials have released a whole new album of Jamaican cover versions, and another full-lengther will be available in early 2001!
The new album titled "Skinhead Girl" is released on Receiver Records which is a sister-label to Trojan Records. Many might remember the "Today's Specials" fiasco from 1994 which was based on the same concept, i.e. remaking old classics, but hopefully we will be spared from any UB40 tendencies this time around.
The album was produced by 2-tone legend Roger Lomas and features informative liner notes. One Step Beyond will present you a review as soon as we can get our hands on a copy.

SKA-PUB IN ROME

Planning a trip to Rome in Italy?
Then a visit to "Sally Brown Rude Pub" is a definite must. The pub is dedicated to the spirit of Jamaican music and its offshoots, but with emphasis on ska.

Great music and Red Stripe beer flowing straight from the barrel can things get any better?
Sally Brown is located at Via degli Etruschi 3/a, S.Lorenzo, Rome.

TOASTERS - An Interview in Cologne
Anyone claiming to know todays ska scene can't say he knows much if he has not heard of The Toasters from NYC. Formed in 1981 they are often recognised as being the first band to bring the offbeat sounds of ska over to the United States. Now, 19 years (and over 2500 sweaty gigs) later, they are looked up on as being the pioneers of the new wave of ska which we experience today.

The englishman Rob "Bucket" Hingley, the singer/guitarist and also the founding member of the band, is often seen as the front figure of the band since he is the only original member left. When record companies refused to sign his band in the early 80's, he set up his own company named Moon Records, which today is one of the world's largest labels catering solely for ska music. Having turned down several offers from major companies, the company still remains independent and supports the grassroots scene by bringing forward talents such as The Scofflaws, Mephiskapheles, NY Ska Jazz Ensemble and many more. Even superstars such as No Doubt have once released material on Moon Records.

One Step Beyond hooked up with Bucket behind the busy merchandise stall at the Popkomm Ska Festival for an interview.
